As the name suggests, Mediterranean trees originate mostly from around the Mediterranean Sea, for example Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Greece and Morocco. - Citrus Limon (Lemon tree)
This is a stunning, colourful tree with yellow fruits, lemons. It’s not without reason that it’s called a lemon tree and is popular for its fruit as well as is cheerful appearance. And you can eat the lemons. They’re extremely good for you, and that’s because they’re bursting with vitamin C. Lemon trees have wonderfully fragrant and beautiful white blossom in spring. The plant can stand outside in the summer, but place your Citrus Reticulata in a sheltered spot in the winter, as it’s unable to withstand freezing temperatures. - Citrus Reticulata (Mandarin orange tree)
The Citrus Mandarino, as this tree is also known, is a real eye-catcher. The white blossom that appears in spring has a wonderful fragrance. While the mandarins are edible, they're not eaten as often as the lemons from the Citrus Limon. The mandarins are more for decoration. And that’s fine because the tree looks stunning. The plant can stand outside in the warmer months, but place it in a sheltered but sunny spot before the colder winter months set in, as this tree is unable to withstand freezing temperatures. - Citrus Sinensis (Orange tree)
The Orange tree’s bright orange oranges are a real eye-catcher. It’s an extremely popular tree across the world. That’s not only because it looks beautiful, but also because of its edible fruit, although the fruit does grow somewhat acidic in our climate. The white blossom is also delightful – it looks stunning and smells wonderful. If it’s cold, place your Citrus Sinensis in a garage or somewhere that provides shelter, as it cannot withstand freezing temperatures. - Ficus Carica (Fig tree)
The Fig tree, Ficus Carica, has large, green hand-shaped leaves with green flowers also appearing in the spring. It truly is a stunning sight. And as well as looking beautiful, this tree has another great feature: the figs are actually edible. They’re really juicy, taste delicious, are extremely healthy, and contain important nutrients. This tree is winter hardy to around -10 degrees Celsius. If your tree is outside in a pot, move it to garage or shed for the winter, sheltered from the wind and cold. - Olea Europaea (Olive tree)
Olive trees are a characteristic tree with gnarled stems. The tree has greenish grey, leather-like leaves. They’re a real asset as well as an eye-catcher for your garden. Olea Europaea bears fruit: olives. But in northern countries they’re more for decoration than consumption. Another great feature is that the tree is a symbol of peace, love, and loyalty, so it’s a perfect gift for you or a loved one. - Punica Granatum (Pomegranate tree)
Pomegranate trees have beautiful small leaves. You can plant them in the ground or in a tub, container, or pot. Its flowers are orange in colour while the fruit flesh of the edible yellow-red pomegranates is dark red. You’re certain to find the pomegranates delicious. You can enjoy the flowers and the dark orange-red, crumpled petals almost throughout the entire summer. - Trachycarpus Fortunei (Chinese Windmill palm)
Trachycarpus Fortunei, also known as the Chinese Windmill palm, is the country’s most frequently sold palm tree. The plant is extremely distinctive, with large, windmill-shaped leaves making it a real eye-catcher. It is winter hardy. - Trachycarpus Wagnerianus (Waggie palm)
Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is the sister of Trachycarpus Fortunei. This Waggie palm has more compact and stronger leaves, making it less sensitive to wind than its sister. This palm tree is a magnificent sight to behold and is winter hardy. Its exotic look and easy-going nature make this a real asset. No extra care is needed. This palm originally comes from Japan but is grown in various countries these days. - Vitis Vinifera (Grape vine)
Vitis Vinifera has wonderfully decorative leaves that give pergolas, fences, and walls such a stunning appearance. The grapes that grow on this plant hang together in bunches. The grapes are white and blue, sometimes even deep purple. It's a wonderful sight. You can eat the grapes or make wine from them. Imagine: wine from your own garden! Grow grape vines against a warm sunny wall and in hot dry summers you’ll get a great harvest. - Wisteria Sinensis (Chinese wisteria)
Wisteria Sinensis, or Chinese wisteria, blooms in April, May, and June. It has stunning, purple-blue, cascading flowers of some 30 centimetres in length. It’s also fantastically fragrant. The plant can become very large and broad and is also a family of the butterfly bush. There’ll certainly be no lack of butterflies in your garden. It’s a joy to behold. The plant originally came from China, but these days you’ll find them in all corners of the world.
Plant straight into the ground?
All these Mediterranean trees and plants are beautiful and distinctive and give your garden a tropical twist. And, of course, they all have their own typical features. Some are best planted straight in the ground. For others, it doesn’t make much difference, as they’re happy planted in the ground or in a pot, tub, or container. If you do plant them in any kind of container you’ll need to move the plant to a sheltered and sunny spot when the weather turns cold. When you do this, make sure the temperature differences aren’t too great. Let the plant get used to the new temperature gradually if you’re moving it from a cold to a warmer place. And the same applies vice versa too. If you’re moving your plant from warm and sheltered pot to outdoors, let it adjust gradually.
Extra protection in winter
Most plants and trees that you plant in the ground will need extra protection in the winter. You could protect it with a fleece or a tree jacket to be safe. If you need more details about this, check out what’s best for each individual plant, or ask our customer services.
How should I care for a Mediterranean tree?
Caring for these trees is different from other trees. They need less water and more sun, which is actually logical as they usually grow in much warmer climes. Most are best planted in an open area rather than against a fence. And don’t plant them in a lowered area in the garden as they’ll probably get too much water, which they don’t like. Too much water could kill the plants. It’s also important that you give your tree additional feed. You can purchase special Mediterranean tree and plant fertilizer for this.
