Fertilising a Galium odoratum
For optimal growth and bloom, it is recommended to fertilize Galium odoratum sparingly, as it thrives in humus-rich soil and requires only minimal additional feeding. An application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at the onset of the growing season, typically early spring, will suffice. This timing coincides with the period when the plant is preparing for its flowering months of April and May, and the nutrients will support the development of lush green foliage and the characteristic white blossoms.
Over-fertilizing should be avoided to maintain the delicate balance of the plant's natural habitat and to prevent excessive growth. The mat-forming habit of Galium odoratum means it covers the ground efficiently, often reducing the need for frequent fertilization. An annual top-up of organic matter, such as compost, can also provide the plant with sufficient nutrients while enhancing the soil structure.
