What are terrace and balcony plants?
As the name suggests, terrace and balcony plants are a selection of garden plants that lend themselves perfectly to a pot or planter on a terrace, patio or balcony. You can order balcony plants inexpensively online at Heijnen Plants. Using these garden plants, you can create a bright and green living environment, both on large and small terraces and balconies. Regardless of the size of your balcony/terrace, you can always find a suitable plant. Terrace and balcony plants are decorative (especially flowering perennials) because of their shape, colour or fragrance. Keep in mind that there are evergreen and non-evergreen balcony plants. If you want year-round colour on your balcony or terrace, choose evergreen potted plants. In addition, the positioning (number of hours of sunlight) and hardiness of the plant are important considerations when purchasing a terrace plant. For example, sun-loving terrace plants do best when they are in the sun all day. So look carefully at how many hours of direct sunlight your balcony or terrace gets and adjust your planting choices accordingly. Another important thing to consider is the winter hardiness of the balcony plant. Note that plants in a pot or planter are more susceptible to frost than garden plants in the open ground. This group of potted plants is also called container plants.
Care
Watering balcony plants
Terrace and balcony plants generally need water sooner than garden plants in the open ground. This is because a plant in a pot/planter gets sunlight from multiple angles and so dries out and warms up faster. Especially when garden and balcony plants have just been planted, timely watering is important. Once rooted in, the plants can absorb water from the entire pot, but even then in hot and sunny weather the plants should be watered (almost) daily. Of course, this is strongly dependent on the positioning. Shade-loving balcony plants, such as Hostas, are less likely to need watering than a Campanula in full sun.
Fertilising terrace and balcony plants
Like all other garden plants, terrace and balcony plants should be fertilised twice a year. The first time in spring, the second time in summer. The plant specialists at Heijnen Plants recommend using Pokon Bio Garden Fertiliser. This fertiliser can be used for all types of terrace plants and ensures rich flowering and good plant resistance. Timely fertilisation also helps maintain strong balcony plants because it keeps them healthier and more vital.
Pruning balcony plants
Balcony plants with flowers create a welcoming and colourful mood! It is best to deadhead spent flowers as soon as possible. This stimulates the formation of new flowers. Removing these spent flowers is best done with sharp pruning shears or carefully by hand. Unsightly or brown branches can also be pruned away in the spring and summer. This ensures a fresh-looking balcony plant! Deciduous terrace plants can be cut back completely in spring to about 5-10 cm above the soil (depending on the type of balcony plant). All care tips for specific balcony or terrace plants can be found on the corresponding product page.
Planting
How and when to plant balcony plants?
All blooming terrace and balcony plants from Heijnen Plants are grown in pots, the great advantage of which is that the root system is already well developed. Repotting in another pot or planter barely damages the root system and enables the plant to grow quickly, depending on the season. Evergreen terrace and balcony plants can therefore be planted all year round. Deciduous potted plants are best planted in spring or summer. When planting, it is important to allow excess water to drain from the pot. So always make sure there is a hole in the pot. Also, always use potting soil (or possibly peat for acid-loving garden plants like Rhododendrons or Azaleas) in a planter as this soil holds moisture better.
Optionally, for tall pots and planters, you can add hydroton pebbles (small balls of clay). These pebbles improve the drainage for plants and are a cheaper way to fill up large pots. In fact, tall pots do not necessarily need to be completely filled with potting soil. To reduce the chance of freezing, the inside of the planter can be insulated with Styrofoam. You can also choose to use only winter hardy balcony and potted plants.
