Transform your garden into a tropical paradise
Life is becoming more and more expensive, so jetting off to a tropical resort isn’t always an option. One solution is to transform your own garden into a tropical oasis so you don't have to go abroad. You can do this by planting tropical plants! Now, we can hear what you’re thinking: “Tropical plants? In our climate?” Well, yes! In fact, there are plenty of hardy tropical plants that can survive our winters.
An oriental twist with bamboo
If a tropical garden makes you think of an Oriental garden, then bamboo is the perfect plant for you! Bamboo plants are often used to add an oriental twist, and they brighten up a garden with their green leaves. In the wild, bamboo can be found in a wide variety of climates – from tropical regions to cold mountainous areas. So they can survive our summers as well as our winters.
When planting bamboo, make sure you choose a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and isn’t too windy. This plant isn’t a huge fan of wind. Make sure you give it plenty of water once in a while, so that the soil isn’t too dry but also not too wet all the time either. Other than that, bamboo plants don't need much looking after.
Exotic palms
White sandy beaches, clear blue skies, and sparkling azure seas... It doesn’t get much more exotic and tropical than that. One thing missing from this picture? Palm trees! Palm trees come in all shapes and sizes. Some grow very large, and others stay smaller. There is a palm out there to suit every garden!
Each type of palm has its own preferences and needs when it comes to location and maintenance. But one thing all our palms have in common is that they are hardy and can survive temperatures as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero. All you have to do is choose your favourite! So, what will be – a fan palm or a yucca? Of course, you can also combine different types of palm. This way, you'll really feel like you're in the tropics!
A Mediterranean touch
Some tropical regions are a little closer to home, for example, the Mediterranean. Here, too, you will find lots of tropical plants that are suitable for our climate. For example, the fig tree, which steals the show with its green, hand-shaped leaves, and edible fruit. Or an all-time favourite, the oleander. This is a low-maintenance plant that has beautiful flowers in the summer months. Besides these, there are many other Mediterranean plants that are perfect for transforming your garden into a tropical paradise.
