Surprising gardening in June
Weather forecasting is becoming increasingly difficult. For example, large differences between regions can occur when it comes to severe weather. It is often difficult to know what type of weather to expect in any given month/region, due to climate change. Especially in a month like June, this can be tricky. It is a month in which we shift from spring to summer and the weather situation can go either way. This can make gardening in this month quite surprising and challenging.
Gardening during a heatwave
We may very possibly have a heatwave on our hands in June. Temperatures can rise sharply and the heat can last a long time. Although this may fill certain people with joy, most plants are less happy about it. Heat and drought are not ideal ingredients for many garden plants to grow and flourish. So if a heat wave arrives, make sure you continue to adequately water the plants in your garden. Sometimes daily, depending on how hot and dry it is.
Note: do this only before or after sunrise. Watering your plants in full sun is not a good idea. The leaves on some plants may burn, and a relatively large amount of water will evaporate in the process. Some plants can also withstand drought and heat better than others. For a list of plants with good drought resistance, see our garden plants for dry soil page.
Gardening during heavy rain showers
The other extreme of a heatwave is heavy rain showers. We have to deal with those more and more too. Huge amounts of rain fall in a short period of time, or it sometimes rains (heavily) for several days in a row. In that case, your garden plants will receive too much water at once. Although there is not as much you can do about this as with a heatwave, but there are some actions you can take. For example, you can plant lots of greenery and put less paving in your garden, so that rainwater can soak away into the ground. Do you have potted plants? If so, make sure they have a hole in the bottom of the pot so the water can flow out. Or put them in a sheltered, covered place for a while.
Although almost every plant must always have well-draining soil to grow well, there are garden plants for wet soil that do well in the moister areas of the garden.
