Planting trees in autumn: normal vs. grafted trees
We are at the beginning of autumn. A season that is ideal for planting trees in your garden. Temperatures in autumn are generally quite mild and the soil is nice and moist around this time. In addition, trees go into dormancy during this period. These are perfect conditions for young trees to root well and store their energy in their roots. When purchasing a tree, you can choose between a normal tree or a grafted tree. We are happy to explain more about this.
Normal trees
By a normal tree we mean a tree that grows from a seed and develops naturally. A characteristic of these types of tree is that they create a strong and extensive root system, which makes for strong and robust trees. In addition, they can adapt well to different soil types. Natural trees can therefore be planted in almost any garden. Because a normal tree grows naturally, it does take a little longer for the tree to take on a certain aesthetic shape and start bearing fruit. Characteristics can also vary from tree to tree and are less predictable.
Grafted trees
A grafted tree is a tree specially created by people. Such a tree is created by placing a branch of a desired tree, also called the graft, on the rootstock of another tree. In this process, the best characteristics of both trees can be combined, creating almost identical trees. The rootstock often determines the strength of the roots, while the graft characterises the upper part the tree, such as leaves and fruit quality. A major advantage of grafted trees is that they often bear fruit sooner than normal trees and are known for their distinctive characteristics. These may include fruit size, flavour, winter hardiness, etc. However, grafted trees are not as strong as natural trees and require more care.
Time to establish
Whether you choose a normal or grafted tree depends mainly on your own preferences. The difference between the two lies mainly in how the trees are propagated and grow. Whichever tree you choose, autumn is the best time to plant it. The cool temperatures and frequent rainfall help to reduce stress on the tree and it can better develop roots. In addition, they have all winter to become well established in the soil before the growing season begins in the spring.
