Osmanthus Burkwoodii: an asset for your garden
There’s high hedges, low hedges and hedges in between. The Osmanthus Burkwoodii is a hedge plant that’s right in the middle. It normally does not grow higher than 1.50 meters and grows very compact and bushy with dark green leaves. This makes it very suitable for a small garden or as low hedges around a walkway. The plant grows slowly and needs pruning only once a year. Ideal. What is even more ideal: it blooms abundantly with white flowers in April and May. They give off a scent that you, but certainly butterflies and bees love. This makes the Osmanthus X Burkwoodii a very attractive inhabitant of your garden. Read more about this plant below.
The origin of Osmanthus Burkwoodii
At the beginning of the twentieth century, brothers Arthur and Albert Burkwoodii started a nursery in England. They were known for improving shrubs. They crossed the Osmanthus Decorus and the Osmanthus Delavayi and this beautiful Osmanthus X Burkwoodii was born.
By the way, do you know what Osmanthus means? In Greek, osme is fragrance and anthos is bloom. So it does live up to its name by the wonderfully fragrant flowers it produces.
Position of Osmanthus X Burkwoodii
Place the hardy Shrub in a sunny or half-shadowed spot in your garden. Make sure the soil is not too wet, fertile and permeable. Prefer a somewhat sheltered spot, as it does not like windy weather. If at any time it is windy at its location, protect it with a cloth. This cloth can also be used to protect the (hedge) plant when it's freezing.
Tips for planting the Burdock
If you want to put the Osmanthus Burkwoodii in a pot, you can actually plant it 365 days a year. Be careful with frost in the ground. The plant can't stand it. If you are going to put it in the open ground on a sunny day, do it in the evening. Even better is to put it in the ground on a cloudy day. That way you can be sure that the plant will not dry out. Whenever you plant it, make sure to water it sufficiently. Before you put the Shrub in the ground, it is best to submerge the entire root ball in water. Then he has a moisture supply. Give it enough water afterwards, until it is well rooted.
Are you planting a hedge of Osmanthus X Burkwoodii? Then keep to this step-by-step plan:
- Remove all weeds.
- Dig a trench about twice as wide as the root ball. Tip: stretch a piece of string. That way you get a straight trench.
- Loosen the soil in the trench and mix this soil with compost.
- Place the plants next to the trench. Satisfied with the distribution?
- Then remove the plant from the pot and completely submerge the root ball, then place it in the trench.
- Toss the trench with soil and press down well.
Fertilizing your Osmanthus Burkwoodii
We recommend fertilizing the plants with a natural nutrient. These organic fertilizers are released gradually and work longer.
Pruning of the Osmanthus Burkwoodii
The Osmanthus Burkwoodii is a shrub that grows slowly. You only need to prune it once a year. And it's not even really necessary.
